Wedding photo tips for camera-shy couples

If you’re wondering how you can possibly live up to those Pinterest wedding photos, here’s the secret ⬇

Prompt: “Just have a walk and look at each other! Have some fun by going really far apart then super close!”

As I reflect on the incredible moments captured during the past wedding season, one thing that I’ve heard A LOT is “we don’t like our photo being taken”. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry, this is maybe 95% of people I meet! So how do all the people in wedding photos look like models? Let's dive into how we get frame-worthy pics without the awkward posing.

No modelling experience needed to keep reading

Prompt: Literally just “let’s go over here!”. It’s all you from there!

Part of Your Story

We've all seen those stiff, awkwardly posed wedding photos that make you cringe a little. I get it; no one wants their special day to be a series of forced smiles and uncomfortable stances. That’s why it’s super important to start with a good relationship between couple and photographer where you can both be yourselves - that will be the biggie. Once you’ve got that box ticked, here’s what I’ve found.

Prompt: “What’s been the best part of the day so far? Mine was when the cat ran through the ceremony with a mouse in its mouth”.

Movement Matters

Picture this: instead of robotic poses, imagine candid moments of laughter, spontaneous twirls, and genuine interactions. Movement brings out the authenticity in every frame, capturing the energy and emotion of the day. Walking, running, dancing, talking, swishing can create natural movements which lead to frame-worthy moments. I'm not here to choreograph your every move; but prompts can help take the pressure off!

Prompt: “Come over this way while having as much fun as possible”. I sometimes drop the shutter speed to about 1/20s to get some blurry romance.

Comfort Over Conformity

I get it – being in front of the camera can be nerve-wracking. Sometimes it’s good to break the ice by asking for them to whisper something in the other’s ear (something they wouldn’t want their parents to hear). When you're comfortable and allowed to move freely, the joy shines through effortlessly. No need to worry about awkward poses or forced smiles – just you, your partner, and the magic of the moment.

Note: I didn’t need to hear what was said in the pictures above, but they told me anyway. Scarred for life.
